Leibniz Center of Early Childhood Education

The Leibniz Center of Excellence for Early Childhood Education (Leibniz-Kompetenzzentrum Frühe Bildung) was founded with the aim of examining the development of domain-specific competencies and their promotion in the first eight years of a child's life as well as designing and carrying out intervention studies. To this end, the Leibniz Center of Excellence combines the expertise of various disciplines: Among others, it involves scientists from the fields of psychology, educational science, economics of education, and the didactics of mathematics and chemistry from various institutes (DIW, DIPF, IPN, IWM, LIfBi) and universities (FU Berlin, Goethe University Frankfurt, Justus-Liebig-University Gießen, Potsdam University, Bamberg University).

The part of the center located at the LIfBi (EarlyEd) focuses especially on the early roots of competency development and their interplay with home and institutional learning environment.

Specifically, we focus on the development and relation of general cognitive abilities (information processing skills, executive functions) and domain-specific competencies (linguistic, mathematical competencies) which will be analyzed within two main topics by using existing longitudinal data (NEPS, BiKS). The first focus is on the influence of early competencies and other influential factors at the ages of 7 and 16 months on later competency development in preschool. The second focus is on the relationship between linguistic, cognitive, mathematical and early science skills in the transition from preschool to primary school.

Project duration: October 2017 – September 2020
