Edited volume of educational decisions and local educational services now available

The volume "Bildungsentscheidungen und lokales Angebot. Die Bedeutung der Infrastruktur für Bildungsentscheidungen im Lebenslauf" (Educational Decisions and Local Services. The Importance of Infrastructure for Educational Decisions in the Life Course), edited by Dr. Michaela Sixt, Dr. Michael Bayer, and Doreen Müller, contains empirical results from the project "BildungsLandschaft Oberfranken" (BiLO, Educational Landscape of Upper Franconia), as well as theoretical considerations on the connection between education and space. A long neglected research gap is systematically addressed here.

3rd international NEPS Conference focuses on the transmission of inequalities across generations

For the third time, the international NEPS conference provided an opportunity for scientists from different disciplines to present and discuss their research work based on NEPS data. On November 22-23, 2018, the LIfBi Research Data Centre organized a diverse program on the subject of "Intergenerational transmission of inequalities": The keynote lecture with the title „The Transmission of Inequality Across Multiple Generations: Testing Recent Theories with Evidence from Germany“ was held by Prof. Dr. Sebastian T. Braun from Bayreuth University and IfW Kiel. Round table discussions, numerous paper presentations, and a poster session were also on the agenda. As in previous years, prizes were also awarded for the best publication and poster of the conference based on NEPS data.

Prof. Dr. Sebastian T. Braun reported on the finding that academic and professional achievements across generations are more consistent than experts had previously assumed.

Study based on NEPS adult cohort: employees at retirement age only partly work for the sake of money

In their study, Prof. Dr. Silke Anger, Annette Trahms, and Dr. Christian Westermeier (Institute for Employment Research, IAB, Nuremberg) examined individual characteristics and motives of people who are employed or wish to be employed during retirement. The report uses representative data from the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) Starting Cohort 6–Adults.

On the relationship between life course and agency

Prof. Dr. Marlis Buchmann, Institute of Sociology at the University of Zurich, introduced her research program as part of the Fall School of the Priority Programme 1646, which was held at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi).

The LIfBi mourns the death of Professor Dr. Susanne Rässler who passed away unexpectedly on August 29, 2018, at the age of 55. The Institute has lost a passionate and exceptional academic who was much loved and respected by all.

First “Research in Germany” attendance at ISA World Congress of Sociology

From July 15 until July 21, 2018, the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) together with several research institutes, six panel studies, as well as the German Data Forum (RatSWD) made a joint appearance under the umbrella “Research in Germany” at the World Congress of the International Sociological Association (ISA). This label has been used by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) since 2006 to finance the presentation of top-level research from Germany at international conferences. Together with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the German Research Foundation (DFG) organized the participation at the conference this time.

Successful cooperation of panel studies in the social sciences and research institutions from the field of refugee and migration studies, and German research funding organizations at the information booth of “Research in Germany”. (© DFG)
