NEPS meets CEPS - Chinese delegation virtually visits LIfBi

How people's educational trajectories are developed is also the subject of current longitudinal research in China. The Renmin University of China in Beijing is home to the Chinese Education Panel Survey (CEPS), a study that is similar in many respects to the National Educational Panel Study in Germany (NEPS). Initiated by the Survey Coordination Unit of the Center for Study Management, a first virtual exchange between representatives of CEPS and NEPS took place on March 26, 2021.

The exchange of experiences focused on aspects of study management; thus, the management and work area heads of the Center for Study Management met with the representatives of the Chinese Educational Panel, including the principal investigator of the CEPS.

Like NEPS, CEPS collects data on educational trajectories in schools and is also organized as a consortium. The CEPS is a nationally representative longitudinal study that began in the 2013/2014 school year with two cohorts (seventh and ninth grade). Approximately 20,000 students from 112 schools across China are participating in the study. CEPS documents students' educational processes and transitions and aims to explain the links between individuals' educational outcomes and the multiple contexts of families, school processes, communities, and social structure, and to further investigate the impact of educational outcomes over the life course. CEPS colleagues are also examining students' biological markers, such as their sports fitness or hemoglobin levels.

"Especially in the area of partial study management, there is a whole range of connecting factors," says Dr. Jutta von Maurice, head of the Center for Study Management at LIfBi. "Of particular interest to us is the circumstance that our Chinese colleagues have already been specifically surveying the importance of networks for educational trajectories since 2013. This topic is on our agenda regarding the start of a new sub-study in 2022. Therefore, the CEPS experience can be very valuable for us."
