The jointly led panel study “Teachers in Adult Education–A Panel Study” (TAEPS) aims to create a lasting database over several survey waves holding comprehensive information on the qualifications, employment conditions, competency profiles, activities in and perceptions of adult and further education (AFE), as well as the effect of training of teachers in AFE. The collected data will be processed and made available to the scientific community for further research.
Over a period of five years, information on professionalization and on supporting the development of competencies of teachers in AFE will be gathered using standardized surveys and randomized field experiments.
TAEPS combines a standardized panel survey with intervention studies to address different research subjects and interests. As part of the standardized survey with three waves of data collection, socio-economic, demographic, professional and job-specific characteristics are recorded. These can be used to investigate changes in employment trajectories. Focus lies on the processes of positioning in the partial labor market of further education and training as well as their causes and consequences.
All of the three intervention studies are based on theoretically founded and empirically proven AFE courses that allow for the targeted support of specific facets of professional competencies of teachers in AFE. Primarily, the focus lies on such aspects that cannot be measured easily by means of standardized surveys and self-assessments, but can only be operationalized via systematic treatments, test procedures, assessments, and expert evaluations. Examples are didactic planning processes or competencies for course planning.
Linking the information from panel surveys and field experiments does increase the external validity of the data. Furthermore, it enables the investigation of longer-term effects of competence development and professionalization on the employment and income opportunities of the target persons.
Data collection and processing
A total of approx. 9,000 target persons in approx. 1,000 further education institutions nationwide are to be selected representatively for the panel survey by means of a two-stage random sampling procedure. The intervention studies will take place following the first wave of the survey on the basis of subsamples of the panel sample.
data of this survey are prepared and documented as Scientific Use Files by the Research Data Center (RDC-LIfBi). By being integrated in the service and data portfolio of LIfBi, the collected data is processed and permanently made available to the scientific community for further substantive and methodological research.
