NEPS-Stage 7: From Higher Education to the Labor Market

NEPS-Stage 7 deals with tertiary education, more specifically with phases of study and formal learning at German universities. With the introduction of Bachelor's and Master's degree courses, studying in Germany has changed considerably. In addition, study formats such as dual study programs have gained in importance. Universities are increasingly developing into institutions of lifelong learning. Last but not least, the topics of higher education and lifelong learning will continue to gain in importance due to developments in demographics, digitalization and decarbonization.

Central research questions

  • What are the determinants of transitions into higher education as well as study progression and success?
  • What do a skills (mis)match and the adequacy of employment in the life course of university graduates depend on?
  • What are the determinants of transitions during studies - such as dropping out, changing subjects, studying abroad, taking up a Master's degree? What are the determinants of academic success?
  • What selectivities are evident when taking up higher education further education courses and what returns are associated with this in the career and life course?

In addition to collecting the relevant basic information on the tertiary education and life situation of young adults, the NEPS-Stage 7 survey program offers differentiated information on the doctoral phase. Stage 7 has also developed a differentiated measuring instrument to record academic and social integration during studies, the learning environment during studies and social-cognitive factors of performance behavior during studies in order to be able to examine the course of studies in a more differentiated way. In addition, the recording of the continuing education function of universities and the diversity of study programs in the field of higher education is of great relevance.
