The research unit “Structures and Systems” combines projects with a particular focus on structural conditions of educational decisions, processes, and outcomes. On the one hand, this comprises studies analyzing the influences of structural conditions, such as local infrastructure or economic conditions. On the other hand, the objective is to identify effects of different institutional frameworks, such as school systems and provisions of the welfare state, or of changes concerning political incentives. Both approaches can be viewed in the context of regionally as well as internationally comparative research.
Currently, the project “Educational Landscape of Upper Franconia (BiLO)” funded by the Upper Franconian Foundation is being carried out. Using the example of Upper Franconia, a fundamental, theoretical framework for action is developed as part of the project in order to analyze the significance of spatial structures for educational decisions across the life course.
