GEBF 2022: Back to the start – Education in the digital transformation

Digitization represents one of the major current developments in society, which at the same time opens up opportunities and poses new challenges. This is particularly true for the transmission of knowledge, for teaching and learning in educational institutions and in informal contexts, and not least for educational research itself. The 9th conference of the Gesellschaft für Empirische Bildungsforschung (GEBF) from March 9 to 11 will examine the field of tension between education and digitization from a wide variety of perspectives. In the year of the 10th anniversary of the society, it will be jointly organized as a virtual conference by the Otto Friedrich University of Bamberg and the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi). Around 900 educational scientists from Germany and abroad are expected to attend, and around 600 conference papers have been submitted.

Corona and digitization
The Corona pandemic not only has an impact on the conference format. Its short- but also long-term effects on the education sector will repeatedly be a focal topic at this year's GEBF conference. On the one hand, the pandemic has impressively demonstrated the potential of digital education, but on the other hand, it has also shown that great efforts are necessary to unfold this potential. Among other things, the conference offers space for discourse on how and which forms of digital teaching and learning should and can be implemented sustainably, which problems are associated with digital education and how these can be addressed. Many of the contributions reflect experiences from the time of the pandemic, present practical examples or focus on methodological approaches.

Cross-section of educational research
As usual, the annual conference offers a broad spectrum of contributions from the various disciplines of empirical educational research. Among them are contributions on the implementation and effectiveness of digital applications in the field of diagnostics and subject-specific or interdisciplinary learning, from model projects or accompanying research on education in kindergarten age, in school contexts or in the context of further and adult education. The conference will also present more than 600 papers on the demands placed on learners and teachers, on educational contexts and institutions, and on the effects on educational opportunities and inequalities. In addition to the impact of the Corona pandemic, a large number of papers will address digitization in teacher education.

10th anniversary year of GEBF
Prof. Dr. Kai Fischbach, President of the University of Bamberg and Prof. Dr. Cordula Artelt, Director of LIfBi, are pleased in their joint greeting that the GEBF conference in the year of the 10th anniversary of the professional society can be hosted by a team from Bamberg this year:

"Empirical social research on education and work has always been at the heart of Bamberg's research profile. Empirical educational research is far more than an academic discipline. The topic of lifelong learning - in the family, at school, at university and at work - is more topical today than ever before. The fact that this year's GEBF conference is dealing with education in digital change against this background is only logical, not least in view of the experiences during the Corona pandemic."

Prof. Dr. Cornelia Gräsel, President of GEBF, is also looking forward to the conference: "The members of GEBF would have been so happy to come to Bamberg. Bamberg, as one of the most important locations for Empirical Educational Research in Germany, would have been an ideal place to celebrate our 10th birthday. It was not to be. But we are now very happy that the organizers* in Bamberg enable us to meet at least virtually and to exchange our latest research results."

The conference is organized by an interdisciplinary team from the University and the Leibniz Institute in Bamberg.
