AI in the context of education: Submit proposals for question modules to NEPS by October 30

Researchers outside the NEPS network can submit proposals for new question modules until October 30, 2025. The current “Call for Modules” is seeking proposals on the topic of "AI-based systems in educational contexts: motives for use, knowledge, trust."

In the current and planned survey program for the starting cohorts 6 (adults) and 8 (grade 5), digital skills and ICT literacy are repeatedly assessed using specially developed tests under the heading “Education in a digital world.” In addition, the survey program includes questions on digital media use in private, school, and professional life, as well as on digital socialization and transformation. Questions on the frequency of use of AI-based systems are also planned (e.g., for creating and revising texts, translating and understanding foreign languages, planning tasks and projects, receiving suggested solutions and feedback, creating and editing images, and programming and creating codes).

The use of AI-based systems in an educational context will in future be supplemented by questions on the motives for using AI systems and knowledge about them. Questions on trust in AI systems may also be included. The current “Call for Modules” is now seeking quality-checked questions on this topic. The module may contain 3 to 5 questions. Proposals in the form of short outlines can be submitted until October 30, 2025. The selection will be made in a rating process by the extended NEPS management.

For over ten years, the National Education Panel Study (NEPS) has been collecting data on skill development and educational trajectories throughout the entire life course. To this end, a total of over 70,000 people, from infants to adults, are being monitored throughout Germany in the seven NEPS starting cohorts. With the “Call for Modules,” the NEPS survey program has been regularly open to external content since 2020.
