LIfBi and IAB organise ECSR Thematic Conference "COVID-19 and Social Inequality in Well-being"

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only led to cuts in social life, education, and work in the short term, but also raises questions about its long-term effects: Did COVID-19 affect the well-being of people in Germany in the short and long term? Did the pandemic lead to systematic disadvantages for certain parts of society in terms of health and well-being and thus to growing social inequality?

At the Thematic Conference 2023 of the European Consortium for Sociological Research (ECSR), which will take place on August, 3-4, 2023, at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) in Bamberg, these questions, among others, will be addressed in an interdisciplinary manner. Their investigation requires the cooperation of different disciplines, as it presupposes a deep understanding of social classes, behavioural economic approaches, psychological and demographic processes, institutional contexts, and medical aspects. In addition, a special focus will be placed on methodological aspects. The conference is organised by LIfBi (Jacqueline Kroh) in cooperation with the Institute for Employment Research (IAB, Matthias Collischon and Alexander Patzina).

Researchers are invited to submit abstracts on the following key topics by 23 April 2023:

  • Medium- and long-term effects of the pandemic on social inequalities
  • Changes in social subsystems and their consequences for individuals
  • Causal analysis of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Methodological challenges in data collection and implications for research

The detailed Call for Abstracts is available as a PDF download here.

The keynote lectures will be given by Anette Fasang (HU Berlin) and Bastian Betthäuser (Science Po, Paris). In addition, the conference will feature a panel discussion with researchers in the field of data collection with an introductory keynote by Thomas Skora (gesis).

The European Consortium for Sociological Research (ECSR) is a non-profit, scientific organisation that promotes theory-driven empirical research in sociology.

The ECSR Thematic Conferences aim to bring together researchers from neighbouring disciplines or professional networks with overlapping interests, including demography, economics, psychology, political science or biology.
