What do you do when you're offline? This question was posed to the participating pupils in summer 2024 as part of the participatory campaign for the DaLi study, which is actually dedicated to researching digital and data-related skills. Numerous creative entries were received. The winners were chosen in spring 2025.
Whether painted pictures, handcrafted collages or videos - the numerous entries show how varied and exciting life without a screen can be. Sport, painting, handicrafts, knitting or making music are just some of the activities depicted. Three winners were selected from all the entries and each received a BestChoice voucher worth up to 300 euros.
The pupils aged 12 and 13 showed in their entries that they are not only digitally active and competent: From Lego installations and 3D dioramas to self-written texts and drawn pictures to collages and origami handicrafts, many creative competition entries reached the DaLi Study team and made selecting the winners a real challenge for the jury.

What is DaLi?
DaLi stands for Data Literacy and is a study that measures the digital and data-related skills of children and adults in Germany every five years. Almost 6,000 people in Germany were surveyed in 2023/24. The participants are randomly selected and represent a representative sample of the German population.
In addition to the five-year survey cycle of the large monitoring survey, 4,500 children were also invited to take part in surveys and tests in 2023/24, most of whom were in 6th grade at the time. They represent a longitudinal sample that allows the development of children's and young people's digital and data-related skills to be monitored and their individual requirements to be understood. The first longitudinal survey also took place in 2023/24. In addition to the test on digital and data-related skills, the children completed a test from the National Educational Panel Study, which focuses in particular on a critical and reflective approach to digital media and technologies. The children also answered questions on the use of digital media and the use of maths and computer-related skills in school and everyday life. The children will be invited to take part in another survey in 2025/26.
