NEPScomp 2.0.0: Enhanced data offering from the National Educational Panel Study for students and university teaching now available

Fuß, Daniel

NEPScomp offers a low-threshold opportunity to get started working with research data from the National Educational Panel Study. Due to its significantly simplified structure and reduced complexity, the data package is particularly well-suited for use by students and those unfamiliar with the NEPS. The new version 2.0.0 of NEPScomp includes, for the first time, longitudinal survey data from Starting Cohort 8 (5th Grade, 2022).

NEPScomp extends the regular Scientific Use Files of the original NEPS starting cohorts. It complements the NEPS data portfolio by compiling the panel data from all seven initial cohorts into a uniform data structure (specifically, by limiting each to eight thematic datasets in a common LONG format) with a compact body of information (for instance, by omitting episode, aggregate, and methodological data). At the same time, NEPScomp enables empirically valid findings on a wide range of research questions in the field of educational research. Detailed information on the content, structure, and use of NEPScomp can be found in the accompanying Data Manual as well as in the two Video Tutorials on the documentation website listed below.

With this latest release, the survey and competence data for the new Starting Cohort 8 are now available in NEPScomp for the first time. The survey waves 1 and 2 for this cohort of fifth graders have been newly integrated. Furthermore, data from the 16th survey wave of Starting Cohort 4 (Grade 9) as well as data from the 16th and the 17th survey wave of Starting Cohort 6 (Adults) were added. Another new feature in this version is the multiple assignment of variables to different datasets within a cohort. This multiple assignment occurs whenever a variable is thematically assigned to different topics and these overarching topics are represented by different datasets.

NEPScomp is conceptualized as a dynamic data product. Through regular updates, the offering is continuously improved and adapted to the needs of its target users. For this purpose, the LIfBi Research Data Center has set up a separate category on the public online platform “Forum4MICA” for broad exchange on NEPScomp-related issues. Questions about the use of the data are welcome there, as well as suggestions for further improvement.

Access to NEPScomp is provided through a NEPS Data Use Agreement. Once registered as a data user, the entire NEPS data portfolio -- including NEPScomp and the standard Scientific Use Files for the NEPS initial starting cohorts -- is available for free download.
