In our everyday lives, we are surrounded by data: whether we are checking the weather forecast, maintaining a household budget, or preparing meals according to recipes. However, data also has a significance in society that should not be underestimated: statistics on employment, crime, or voting behavior regularly form the basis for political decisions that affect us all. So wouldn't it make sense to teach children “data literacy” from an early age? Martin Bregenzer from klicksafe discusses this question with Prof. Dr. Ilka Wolter from the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories, one of the leaders of the project “Data Literacy – Digital and Data-Related Skills in Germany.” Together with her, we consider where data literacy and media literacy complement each other and why confident handling of data leads to greater social participation.
