The Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) in Bamberg studies educational processes from birth to old age. In order to promote longitudinal research in educational science in Germany, LIfBi provides a fundamental, supraregional and internationally significant, research-based infrastructure for empirical educational research. The core of the institute is the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), which is based at LIfBi and combines the expertise of a Germany-wide, interdisciplinary network of excellence.

NEPS at the ICP 2012 in Cape Town, South Africa

From July 22-27, the NEPS presented itself at the 30th International Congress of Psychology in Cape Town, South Africa, together with other German longitudinal studies as part of the framework initiative ”Research in Germany“ by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

At the 30th International Congress of Psychology, which took place in Cape Town, South Africa, from July 22-27, the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) was prominently represented. Representatives of the four big German panel studies in the social sciences (SOEP, SHARE, PAIRFAM and NEPS) attended to the exhibition booth “Research in Germany“ during the conference together with additional representatives from the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the German Data Forum. Here, also a ”meet and greet“ took place, with nearly 200 scientists from all over the world visiting the stall. Many interesting discussions ensued, especially on the previously rarely practiced use of secondary data resources by psychological researchers. The symposium ”German Longitudinal Data Resources for the Social Sciences: A View on the Potential for Psychology“ chaired by Dr. Jutta von Maurice, Executive Director of Research of the NEPS, was also well-attended. Dr. Anne Brüggemann, Program Director for the Humanities and Social Sciences of the DFG, discussed the following five papers:

  • Armin Günther & Erich Weichselgartner: Sharing Research Data in Psychology: Resistance, Benefits, and Initiatives.
  • David Richter, Jürgen Schupp & Gert G. Wagner: The Multiple-Cohort Longitudinal Study SOEP as a Rich Data Source for Psychological Research.
  • Frederic Malter: The Survey of Health Aging and Retirement in Europe – A European Research Infrastructure on Aging.
  • Bernhard Nauck & Oliver Arránz Becker: pairfam - Panel Analysis of Intimate Relationships and Family Dynamics.
  • Thomas Bäumer, Jutta von Maurice, Hans-Peter Blossfeld, Sabine Weinert & Hans-Günther Roßbach: The German National Educational Panel Study: A New Database for Psychologists Interested in Empirical Educational Research.

All participants valued both exhibition and symposium as a great success and are planning a continuation in the future.

NEPS | National Educational Panel Study

The National Educational Panel Study is the largest long-term educational study in Germany. By continuously interviewing and testing more than 70,000 people, an internationally significant treasure trove of data is being created and is growing, which can be used to research educational processes from birth to high adulthood. 

The NEPS combines the expertise of more than 200 scientists at more than 13 locations throughout Germany and is based at LIfBi in Bamberg.
