Organization

The Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) is a legally independent institute and affiliated institute of the Otto Friedrich University Bamberg. The LIfBi's mission is to promote and conduct longitudinal research in educational science. To this end, the Leibniz Institute develops fundamental, nationally and internationally significant research-based infrastructures for empirical educational research and makes them available to the scientific community.

Board Of Directors and Executive Board

The Executive Board of LIfBi consists of Prof. Dr. Cordula Artelt (Director) and Dr. Stefan Echinger (Director of Administration). The Director is responsible for the management of the Institute as a whole, she is supported by the Director's Unit. The Director of Administration is Head of the Administration. Together they are responsible for representing the Institute in and out of court.

In addition to the Executive Board members, the Deputy Director Prof. Dr. Corinna Kleinert is also a member of the Board of Directors.

The Management Conference supports the Board of directors in planning the research and infrastructure work of the Institute, in carrying out current tasks and in coordination. The members of the Management Conference are the heads of the four departments of the Institute, Prof. Dr. Ilka Wolter, Prof. Dr. Corinna Kleinert, Prof. Dr. Christian Assmann and Dr. Jutta von Maurice, as well as the Board of Directors.

Departments of the Institute

The departments of the Institute have different thematic orientations and are divided into separate working units.

Department 1 contains the working units Competencies, Learning Environments and School Education, Personality, and Early Education and has a psychological and pedagogical research perspective. The department is led by Prof. Dr. Ilka Wolter.

Department 2 includes the working units Educational Decisions and Social Inequality, Migration, Returns to Education, as well as Structures and Systems and has a sociological and economic research perspective. The department is led by Prof. Dr. Corinna Kleinert.

Department 3 is home to the Research Data Centre (RDC). Further working units include Educational Measurement, Statistical Survey Methods, as well as Software Development. The department is led by Prof. Dr. Christian Aßmann.

The Center for Study Management (ZSM) consists of five working units: Survey Administration and Controlling, Survey Coordination, Study Communications, Data Protection in Surveys and Survey Technology. The department is led by Dr. Jutta von Maurice.

Junior Research Groups

At LIfBi there are several independent Junior Research Groups. LIfBi's first Junior Research Group was established in 2016 and conducted research on "Gender Roles and Competences Across the Life Course" for a period of four years. The second Junior Research Group at LIfBi started its work at the end of 2021 with a research focus "Educational Outcomes Across the Lifespan". From January 2023, an Emmy Noether Junior Research Group funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) was added.

Bodies and Committees

The Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories was founded as an association in Berlin on May 29, 2013. The General Meeting of Members decides, among other things, upon changes to its statutes. The Board of Trustees advises and controls the Board of Directors. Their tasks include, for example, the appointment and exoneration of the members of the Board of Directors as well as approving the program budget. The Scientific Advisory Board advises the Board of Trustees on these tasks, considering recommendations by the Senate of the Leibniz Association. It regularly carries out measures of quality assurance on currently running operations.

Representatives and Elected Officers

Representative officers or elected representatives deal with various tasks and issues concerning the organization. The main contact persons for external parties are the corporate Internal Data Protection Officer and the Ombudspersons. Furthermore, the LIfBi has elected representatives for its employees (Works Council), doctoral and postdoctoral candidates, and representative officers for equal opportunities and inclusion, as well as corporate health management and an ethics committee.
