LIfBi accredited as a research institution by Eurostat

The Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) has now been officially accredited as a research institution by the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) and included in the list of so-called ‘Recognised Research Entities’. This means that LIfBi can now submit research applications for access to anonymised microdata from Eurostat. This opens up new opportunities for empirical educational and social research with data sets that are comparable across Europe.

EEurostat is the statistical office of the European Union, based in Luxembourg. The institution provides high-quality, harmonised statistics on key areas of society such as population, education, the economy, labour, the environment and technology. The data is collected by the national statistical offices of the member states, checked by Eurostat, consolidated and prepared in a comparable manner using uniform methods.

Accreditation as a recognised research institution is subject to strict requirements. These include, among other things, proof of independent scientific research as a core task, corresponding publication activity and comprehensive data security measures. Only accredited institutions are given the opportunity to apply for access to microdata for scientific purposes.

‘Accreditation by Eurostat expands our research infrastructure and thus our research opportunities,’ says Prof. Dr Christian Aßmann, Head of the Research Data Centre, Methodology Research Department. ‘LIfBi researchers now have access to high-quality statistical microdata, which opens up extensive opportunities for international comparative analyses in the fields of education, social and labour market research.’
