The Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) in Bamberg studies educational processes from birth to old age. In order to promote longitudinal research in educational science in Germany, LIfBi provides a fundamental, supraregional and internationally significant, research-based infrastructure for empirical educational research. The core of the institute is the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), which is based at LIfBi and combines the expertise of a Germany-wide, interdisciplinary network of excellence.

Guest Lecture by Professor Ekkehard Nuissl von Rein

On March 16, 2012, Professor Ekkehard Nuissl von Rein, scientific director of DIE (German Institute for Adult Education), gave a guest lecture about “Systems of Adult Education: Structures, Categories and Indicators”.

Due to the high complexity and variety of the topic of adult education, he first explained some basic definitions and terms regarding German and English linguistic usage.

Hereafter, he provided some historical insight into the development of adult education in Germany and described the current institutional situation. In general, a solid institutional structure of adult education does not exist in Germany, according to Professor Nuissl von Rein, due to a wide variety of providers and contents as well as a remarkable divergence in the duration of activities.

Afterwards, Prof. Nuissl von Rein presented some empirical evidence and other sources of information regarding adult education and gave an insight into the participation rates of different population groups in Germany. The lecture was followed by a vivid discussion about the German structure of adult education, particularly with regard to older employees. Furthermore, questions on how to compare international systems of adult education were discussed.

NEPS | National Educational Panel Study

The National Educational Panel Study is the largest long-term educational study in Germany. By continuously interviewing and testing more than 70,000 people, an internationally significant treasure trove of data is being created and is growing, which can be used to research educational processes from birth to high adulthood.

The NEPS combines the expertise of more than 200 scientists at more than 13 locations throughout Germany and is based at LIfBi in Bamberg.
