The project serves (a) to replicate the research on the the published article "Meta-Heuristics in Short Scale Construction" by Schroeders et al. and (b) to verify it.
Occupations are central to research on stratification and educational returns, yet classifying individuals into occupations involves uncertainty. Previous research documents inconsistencies across coders, repeated survey reports, and survey-register linkages, usually interpreting such discrepancies as measurement error. However, the latter discrepancies may also reflect that survey and register reports are produced in different social and organizational contexts, in which occupational positions are communicated differently. Against persistent occupational gender segregation, we ask whether survey-register mismatches are structured by workers' gender and occupational gender composition.
Using longitudinal data from the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), this project examines how teacher self-efficacy develops from university-based teacher education through induction and into the early years of teaching. The central question is whether groups with distinct developmental trajectories can be identified. The project explores whether these groups differ in their initial levels of self-efficacy and in the direction and magnitude of change over time, and how their trajectories relate to career transitions.
The project studies how students form beliefs about their abilities and educational options, and how these beliefs shape decisions along their educational path. A focus is whether expectations from parents, teachers or peers matter through the information they convey or through social norms and identity. The analysis combines theoretical models with empirical work linking students' beliefs and others' expectations to educational outcomes.
In ths Master's seminar, we are dealing with the social mechanisms leading to educational inequalities. We will theoretically derive those mechanisms and design strategies how to test them empirically. The empirical tests will be conducted with NEPS data of different starting cohorts.
As part of a seminar paper, the effects of lifecourse events such as a diagnosis of dyslexia on educational paths will be examined.
This project investigates the prevalence and consequences of promotive voice behavior among teachers compared to employees in other occupational groups using data from the Starting Cohort 5. Voice refers to the proactive expression of suggestions, ideas, and concerns aimed at improving organizational functioning. While previous research has largely focused on private-sector organizations, little is known about whether voice is similarly common and beneficial for teachers and whether empirical data supports potential differences with regard to gender.
Early-career displacement may have lasting consequences, yet little is known about displacement before individuals fully enter the labor market. This study examines the consequences of losing an apprenticeship training position due to firm closure, an unexpected shock that disrupts both employment and skill formation. Using administrative data from Germany and a matched event study design, I estimate the effects of displacement during vocational education and training.
This project aims to study the effect that educational competencies and qualifications have on labor market outcomes and the state's fiscal balance in Germany. The NEPS data allow to, first, establish a correlational link between competencies and educational degrees and, second, to investigate the connection between degrees and labor market outcomes such as employment and earnings.
Using longitudinal NEPS data, this project investigates the stability of relationships among cognitive, emotional, and social development from infancy to adolescence and their variation across socioeconomic groups.
Research has already shown that reading is a complex process which is influenced by a number of different factors, particularly in the higher education context (Afdal et al., 2023). At the same time, students are reporting difficulties with reading as part of their studies (Mason & Warmington, 2024). For this reason, in our planned research we wish to place focus on antecedents and determinants of higher education students' literacy. The aim is to examine students’ reading practices and reading literacy in greater detail.
This project uses NEPS Starting Cohort 5 to examine profiles of peer and faculty integration, degree goal value, and experienced sacrifice costs, and their associations with later educational transitions. Starting at Wave 2, we will examine changes of field, degree completion, and departures without a degree, distinguishing interruptions from survey nonresponse. Profile models will be assessed for measurement adequacy and stability and compared with continuous-indicator models. Analyses will consider prior educational and family background, survey design, classification uncertainty, and incomplete follow-up, to understand heterogeneous student circumstances relevant to educational support.
Peer effects in student outcomes have received considerable attention in economic research. What are the effects of peer composition on cognitive, non-cognitive skills or other policy-relevant outcomes? I also want to shed light on the question if comprehensive schooling is able to mitigate the still existing importance of socio-economic background.
This project investigates when developmental differences emerge that may later lead to the identification of special educational needs in learning (SEN-L). Although SEN-L is often assigned to students who experience persistent difficulties in acquiring educationally relevant competencies, the developmental origins of these challenges are not yet fully understood. The project examines whether these differences can be observed long before formal identification during primary school and aims to identify potential protective factors that may promote positive developmental trajectories.
This project examines the individual and aggregate advantages and disadvantages of early school tracking, as done in the German education system. Students differ in their comparative advantage across education styles. While some benefit more from a purely academic setting that trains them for higher education, other students learn better in a more vocational setting that trains them for entering the labor market. However, students, parents, and teachers may initially have incomplete information about these differences. Early tracking may therefore improve educational outcomes by providing specialized learning environments, but it may also assign students to unsuitable tracks before their abilities are sufficiently well understood. Using longitudinal NEPS data on competencies, educational trajectories, and labor market outcomes, we will estimate how the returns to different educational tracks vary across heterogenous students and how these returns depend on the timing of track assignment. We will incorporate these estimates into a quantitative model to assess the aggregate and distributional effects of the current German tracking system and compare it with alternative tracking policies.
This project aims to investigate the relationships between metacognition, self-evaluation, academic performance, and subsequent educational development using longitudinal data from the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS). Specifically, the study will examine how metacognitive knowledge and individuals' evaluations of their own abilities relate to academic outcomes and educational trajectories over time. Where suitable measures are available, the project will also investigate discrepancies between subjective ability evaluations and objective performance, and their associations with subsequent educational outcomes. Longitudinal statistical methods will be employed to examine these relationships.
This project is guided by the following research questions: 1) What behavioral indicators of attrition risk among higher education students have been identified in the existing literature? 2) How can educators be supported by identifying susceptibility patterns and by improving student attrition predictions? The research objective is to support educators by identifying key predictors of student attrition and developing a computational ensemble framework to predict attrition risks.
This doctoral research will use wave 6 of the National Educational Panel Study - Starting Cohort 2 to examine whether external restrictions experienced by school management are associated with teachers' perceived restrictions arising from school-management guidelines. It will also investigate whether this association is weaker where teachers report greater participation in important school decisions. The study is informed by Self-Determination Theory and the proposition that school leaders may buffer, rather than transmit, external pressure.
The project investigates demographic and intergenerational mechanisms of change in the religious composition of the German population. It estimates completed cohort fertility by religious denomination and cohort-specific rates of intergenerational transmission of religious affiliation, combining these to assess religious reproduction across cohorts. NEPS SC6 will be used to analyse respondents' own fertility histories in relation to religious affiliation, birth cohort and sociodemographic characteristics.
This project examines who participates in digital and Al-related continuing vocational training (CVT), and why, with a focus on gender and age. Explaining disparities requires attention to three interrelated levels. First, at the individual level, health needs and care responsibilities may influence participation in training. Second, at the occupational level, technology use and performed tasks are linked to training participation. Finally, at the workplace level, organizations distribute training according to their specific inequality regimes (e.g., Seegers & Zeyer-Gliozzo, 2025; Peters et al., 2023). Using data from the National Education Panel Study (NEPS) SC6 in combination with NEPS-SC6-ADIAB, we first examine differences in CVT participation by gender and age, particularly in digital and Al-related CVT. Second, we use regression and decomposition analyses to identify individual, occupational, and organizational factors that explain these differences. Our analysis focuses on employees surveyed in the NEPS in 2023 and 2024. We examine participation in non-formal training related to individuals' primary employment, as well as informal learning through media and online or app-based media.
This project explores cognitive and neural differences in trilingual processing among Chinese, German, and Spanish speakers in AI-mediated contexts. Combining area studies, psycholinguistics, and hyperscanning, it examines how language-specific features affect speech perception, imitation, and learning, and compares teacher-led, peer, and large-language-model-assisted instruction.
The aim of this project is to contribute to a deeper understanding of how upper secondary schools as educational contexts can promote higher education attainment. Specifically, we will focus on social interactions and organizational strategies, and their potential to reduce educational inequalities at the transition to higher education.
This project studies how students' academic performance and beliefs about their abilities relate to effort, educational aspirations, and later human-capital choices. Using longitudinal NEPS data, it will examine academic self-beliefs and persistence in relation to educational specialization, field-of-study choices, and university persistence or dropout.
The project is a bachelor's thesis that studies the effect of children's musical engagement on educational outcomes, cognitive skills and well-being using several panel datasets from Germany and the US. The NEPS dataset is used to replicate and extend Knaus (2021), which uses NEPS SC4 to study the effect of different intensities of music making. This thesis extends the analysis to outcomes of early adulthood, e.g., completion of Abitur, vocational training and higher education, Big Five personality traits and health outcomes.
This project uses longitudinal data from the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) to examine reading and mathematics competence growth in lower secondary education. It explores how student learning-related characteristics and school conditions (including school type) relate to initial achievement and growth rates, and whether these associations differ by school type or migration background.
The project asks whether the association between educational attainment and political attitudes — lower authoritarianism, higher political interest and trust, weaker support for redistribution — reflects schooling itself or the cognitive ability and income that select people into education. Analyses of British cohorts with childhood ability measures, sibling fixed effects (Wisconsin) and individual fixed effects (BHPS/Understanding Society) show that education affects values and engagement but not economic attitudes once ability and income are held constant. The NEPS Adult Cohort is requested to test this pattern in Germany, using the measured competencies as pre-treatment ability controls and the political interest, trust and social-attitude items.
This project examines how high academic achievement emerges and develops across the school years. Using repeated competence assessments from NEPS Starting Cohort 3 and, where suitable, Starting Cohort 2, it will study entry into, persistence within, and departure from the upper achievement range. Further analyses will examine associations with family and school learning environments and educational pathways. Initial work will assess longitudinal coverage and measurement precision at the upper end of the competence distributions. Analyses will account for measurement uncertainty and selective participation.
This ERC-funded project investigates how income inequality perpetuates itself across generations. To do so, we aim to combine panel datasets, including NEPS, following primary and/or secondary school students over time and test (i) whether national income inequality predicts widening gaps in academic performance between students from poorer and wealthier families (e.g., grade completion, GPA, and test scores) and (ii) whether it similarly predicts widening socioeconomic disparities in post-school outcomes (e.g., university attendance, when available).
This project examines how childcare responsibilities shape participation in non-formal job-related training among employed adults, and whether family and workplace support structures can mitigate this relationship. Building on theories of time allocation, work-care conflict, and social capital, the study investigates whether the availability of support – both from family members and from employers – buffers the negative association between childcare responsibilities and job-related training involvement. Particular attention is paid to potential differences between mothers and fathers. Using longitudinal panel data, the project aims to contribute to the understanding of how caregiving-related inequalities in lifelong learning can be reduced through supportive structures.
The project examines educational and occupational trajectories of adults with outstanding school-leaving achievement. Using NEPS Starting Cohort 6, holders of a general higher education entrance qualification with grade 1.0 are compared descriptively with Maximilianeums scholarship students. Outcomes include tertiary education, doctorate, habilitation, occupational status, employment history, leadership, and income. Analyses consider age, birth cohort, gender, and field where available. Aggregate NEPS estimates will be benchmarked against published aggregate historical statistics for Maximilianeum scholarship recipients.
The project deals with the question how the initial level and developmental trajectory of intrinsic motivation change among students with a migration background, and to what extent individual and school-related factors can explain differences in these patterns.
The research project focuses on the question how effects of high-school personal discrimination and diminished academic self-concept shape post-secondary educational and career trajectories of immigrant youths in Germany.
The project studies educational expansion by treating higher education as a positional good. It focuses on changes in the relative value of educational qualifications and their relationship with labour market returns, as well as on the role of social origin in shaping graduates' relative position within the higher education system.
This empirical research project investigates the relationship between immigrant background and the type and intensity of parental involvement in the school context. The core innovation of this study lies in modeling language proficiencies as relational moderators. It analyzes how the individual language skills of parents (in the instructional language), the proficiencies of the students, and particularly the discrepancy between both (e.g., language brokering by children) influence this dynamic. The objective is to identify origin-specific barriers and provide actionable insights for targeted parental engagement strategies.
This broader research project investigates the mechanisms underlying the inequality between welfare and non-welfare youth in the transition to vocational education in Germany. NEPS data complements evidence from the other ongoing projects based on administrative data from the IAB. Specifically, using NEPS data, I am interested in exploring micro level mechanisms derived from the Breen and Goldthorpe model and the related theoretical and empirical debate.
According to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) students at European universities are supposed to obtain on average 30 credits per semester to finish their program within the scheduled study duration. The first goal of our project is to ascertain the extent to which students (are able to) adhere to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), and whether this differs across study programs and types of higher education institutions (Universität, Fachhochschulen). In order to assess the external validity of some of our own field experiments, we also aim to compare the distributions of performance measures such as obtained credit points in experiments against this broader and representative sample of students in higher education.
This project uses NEPS SC3 to examine socioeconomic differences in students' perceived teacher-facilitated peer interaction, parent-reported social integration, and intrinsic reading motivation. It investigates how these indicators are associated across available measurement occasions and whether the associations are stronger for socioeconomically disadvantaged students (compensation) or advantaged students (cumulative advantage). Analyses will use longitudinal structural equation models appropriate to the timing and number of available measures, together with measurement-invariance and missing-data procedures where applicable.
This project examines contextual, structural, familial, and individual factors associated with the development, course, and diagnostic attribution of ADHD and related externalizing and internalizing symptomatology in childhood and adolescence, using longitudinal data from the NEPS. It investigates how socioeconomic, family-related, parenting, and individual-level factors relate to symptom development, divergence, and classification as clinically significant across assessment waves, drawing on predictive and longitudinal modeling approaches. The overarching aim is to advance understanding of the context-dependence of ADHD and related childhood behavioral and emotional difficulties, including related questions on developmental trajectories, socioeconomic gradients, and mechanisms of symptom-to-diagnosis classification that arise within this research program.
We investigate whether unmet educational aspirations among children of immigrants in Germany are associated with adolescents' mental well-being, health, and ethnic retention, and whether this varies by migrant generation and origin group. In this study we will use the CILS4EU data in combination with the NEPS data.
This project will use longitudinal NEPS data to model and simulate educational choices during the transition from primary to secondary education in Germany. It will examine how individual and family characteristics shape students' placement in different secondary-school pathways. The resulting estimates will then be used to simulate educational transitions and trajectories.
This project sets out to determine whether changes in social status influence right-wing populist voting. To obtain the social status scale, I use position generator questions, to construct a scale of socialised status stratification. As the NEPS contains position generator items in multiple waves, this data allows me to construct scales for multiple years.
